When to Winterize

Begin winterization when average daily temperatures drop below 40°F (4°C) consistently, or before your marina's deadline for winter storage. In northern climates, target completion by mid-November.

Engine Winterization

Inboard Diesel

  1. Change engine oil and filter — acids in used oil corrode internals over winter
  2. Replace fuel filters — water in fuel causes microbial growth
  3. Fill fuel tank to 95% — minimizes condensation air space
  4. Add fuel stabilizer — run engine 15 minutes to circulate
  5. Flush raw water system with antifreeze — run until pink antifreeze exits exhaust
  6. Remove impeller — store in a dry place to prevent set deformation
  7. Seal exhaust outlet — prevent rodent entry

Outboard Engines

  1. Flush with freshwater for 10 minutes
  2. Fog the cylinders through spark plug holes
  3. Drain lower unit gear oil — check for milky appearance (water intrusion)
  4. Store vertically or per manufacturer guidance

Freshwater System

  1. Drain all tanks via low-point drains
  2. Open all faucets to break vacuum
  3. Blow out lines with compressed air (low pressure — max 30 PSI)
  4. Pour non-toxic propylene glycol antifreeze into each fixture until it flows from outlets
  5. Bypass water heater or drain separately

Electrical System

  • Lead-acid batteries: Remove, store in cool dry place, trickle charge monthly
  • LiFePO4 batteries: Can remain aboard if BMS supports low-temp cutoff; store at 50–60% SOC
  • Solar panels: Disconnect or cover to prevent overcharging unattended batteries
  • Shore power: Disconnect and coil cables indoors

Rigging & Sails

  • Remove sails and store flat or rolled in a dry location
  • Inspect standing rigging for cracked swages or broken strands
  • Apply rigging tape to turnbuckle threads
  • Lubricate winches and furler bearings

Hull Protection

  • Haul out: Pressure wash hull, apply anti-fouling if due
  • In-water storage: Install agitator or hire diver for monthly hull cleaning
  • Cover: Use breathable cover — trap moisture causes mildew
  • Ventilation: Install dorade vents or solar vents to prevent mold

Spring Commissioning Preview

Document everything you do during winterization. Your spring commissioning checklist is essentially reversing each step — you'll thank yourself in April.
